Making Your Storage Shed

Storage shed projects have become quite common nowadays. We always need an additional storage space for all that equipment, clutter, and what-not. But building a storage shed is a good way to get things organized and if you know how to pick the right ones, they even add in a nice bit of flair to the aesthetic view of your home and garden.

So let’s discuss how you should go about making your storage shed. What are the things you need to consider? Storage shed kits and shed plans are available almost anywhere nowadays but that doesn’t mean you should just go out and purchase one with little thought.

Sure, it’s not as expensive as building a house but it will still run you a couple of hundred dollars or even a few thousand if you want a really fancy storage shed. Thus, first of all, before you go out and purchase some shed plans or storage shed kits, think of the desired dimensions of your storage shed. Calculate just how much additional storage space you will need and whether it would look fine or not at that size in your lawn or garden.

Second, decide on your material. Would you want wood, vinyl, plastic, or metal storage sheds or a combination or one or two or more of these materials? How would these materials work against the weather and climate in your area? What would be the cost of maintaining them?

Third, see whether or not it would entail additional labor and cost to build the shed. Some sheds with more sophisticated designs can require additional equipment to build, if you prefer a DIY or do-it-yourself storage shed kit, then pick one with a simpler design.

Last but not the least, check to see if you are within budget. If you are just a little over, it’s fine but when it becomes too expensive, recheck all the details herein mentioned and re-evaluate.

Good Qualities of a Lawn Aerator

There are a lot of different types of lawn aerator out there. When you buy one, you want to make sure that it is the best one for your needs.  If you are just buying and aerator for your own lawn, you still want to buy one that is going to do a good job time and time again.  If you are only interested in a hand aerator, then I recommend you buy a bully hand aerator.  I think that you want to get one that has cores instead of spikes, and I think if you get one that has two cores, you will be pretty happy with how it works.

If you are able to, I would recommend that you buy a used machine aerator instead.  You can buy used aerators for $300-$400 if you know how to shop for them.  When I shop for aerators, I called around in November or December to all of the local shops and I asked them if they have any aerators for sale. Some aerators are better than others and some do a better job with lawn aeration.  The types of aerators that I like the best are the Ryan models and the Billy goat models.  However, I only like the new Billy Overton because the old Billy goat is very hard and bulky to use.  I do not like bluebird aerators very much because a lot of the important parts are made out of plastic instead of metal and so they tend to fall apart a lot easier.  I had a bluebird lawn aerator for about three years that I bought new.  I think it spent more time in the shop than it did actually aerating. I wouldn’t pay more than $400 for used generator, and I would also want to make sure it had a Honda engine and it wasn’t to beat up.  You can tell how old an aerator is by looking at the times. The older and aerator gets, the wider the times are at the bottom.

How To Grow Potatoes In Your Garden

You can grow potatoes in your garden without putting much work in vegetation. It is important to understand the climatic and soil conditions in which they grow. The internet is the best place to start looking for information about it. Following the acquisition of information, it is time to start planting potatoes. How do you grow potatoes? It will be a simple question to answer for most people after doing some internet search.

They grow well in soil with pH level of 5 to 6.5. The soil should have a good amount of nutrients because they do not grow in regular soil. The potatoes must obtain an optimal amount of sun and shade for a healthy growth. You can go ahead and plant them about a month before the last frost.

How does one start planting potatoes? It is important to understand the spacing requirements before planting. The area should be 3-4 feet in length and 4 inches wide. If you want to grow several plants, they should be 15 inches apart, and you should dig at least a foothold in the soil. The seeds should be placed 9.5 centimeters from the surface.

Fertilizers are very important to the growth of all plant species or vegetation. Organic fertilizer is the best way to go. Growing potatoes is not actually a difficult task, as long as you have a good understanding of vegetation. You must work on cultivating the plants during the growing season to maintain soil fertility. Be sure to dig trenches before planting the seeds to make sure they get adequate water.

Potato plants may need two inches of water per week to stay healthy. They grow best when the temperature is kept at 65 degrees. This is necessary for the seedlings to get the most out of the fertilizer. You can pile 8 inches of plants to grow more potatoes. You can add a piece of land on the hill every week. Some farmers use mulch to enrich and insulate the soil. Go Crazy With Solar Powered Christmas Lights

With the holidays approaching, many minds have turned to shopping, eating…and decorating the yard with boatloads of Christmas lights.  If you still remember the lump in your throat as you paid your electric bill after last year’s holiday season, you might want to think about replacing your outdoor decorations with solar powered Christmas lights this time around.

If you are thinking that there just aren’t enough different styles to choose from, think again.  People have really taken a shine to these solar lights, and that has made them a marketer’s dream.  Not only are they available at many vendors online, but most brick-and-mortar stores such as Home Depot, Walmart, K-Mart, Target and Walgreens also carry a respectable array of these solar beauties.  Not only are these products green because of the use of sunlight to charge the batteries, but they also use the super-efficient LED lamps to cast that calming holiday glow.

The most popular of these types of lights are the old standby, the string light.  These consist of a string of individual LED lights, either white, all one color, or multicolored.  The ever-popular icicle-style lights are also available in the solar-powered aisle, and there are also some colors to choose from in this product line.  Solar rope lights, where the bulbs are encased in clear vinyl tubing, are also showing up on store shelves right about this time of year.  Net lights, also powered by the sun, make it easy to drape your shrubs in holiday cheer and come in many colors, as well.

If that doesn’t satisfy your craving for outdoor solar Christmas lighting, there are also solar powered Christmas lights on wreaths and garland and standalone decorations such as solar Santas, snowmen, stars, and other traditional shapes.  If you’re feeling really jiggy, why not throw a remote control into the mix to wow your friends and neighbors?  Who knows–you may be the first in your area to win the holiday yard decoration prize using solar energy!

Composters: The Best Large Compost Tumblers

I am the sort of person who doesn’t like to do things by halves so when I decided to buy myself a compost tumbler it had to be the biggest compost tumbler I could afford! When I started to look for the best large compost tumblers, I found the online review sites very useful, simply because they had plenty of compost tumbler as well as aerators and worm farms for me to look at and compare.

I had already decided that it was a tumbler that I wanted but it was still worth getting an opinion on other forms of composting. It was also worth knowing off the pit falls of having a vertical compost tumbler, it is actually quite surprising the amount of compost tumblers that there are out there to choose from. Which is why it was so good to look and compare rather than jumping straight in and blowing my money.

The final result of my research was to buy an Envirocycle compost tumbler with this not only do I get some great compost that is easily made but I also get something called compost tea. Compost tea is like a miracle liquid that would normally go to waste, it is the liquid that seeps out of your organic vegetable matter as it rots down and would normally just soak into the ground.

With the Envirocycle it is collected in the hollow base where it can be drained off via a spigot, this can then either be diluted 20 parts water to 1 part compost tea and use as a foliar spray or used to water straight on to the soil around your plants. The only thing you must remember is not to spray it onto any leaves you intend to eat, salad leaves and so on. All in all I am very pleased with my new compost tumbler.

Home Gardening – Eat Healthy, Stay Healthy!

Which thought dwells your mind when every other day you come to know about the usage of chemicals and other pesticides for artificial growth of vegetables and fruits? Definitely you would think of planting the vegetables and fruits in your garden. But then the constraint of space in these urban cities will turn down all your thoughts.

Busy lifestyles, working family members, and limited space in urban cities essentially creates a need for a method other than traditional vegetable gardening. As a result, gardeners try producing from limited space which even include containers on patios, decks or balconies. There are in fact various other methods of gardening that may be used.

Old British gardeners implemented the technique of interplanting vegetables for effective utilisation of space. Inter planting is a method where quick-growing, early maturing crop is planted between the rows of a later-maturing crop that will later enlarge to fill the entire space. Thus the crops may be planted in alternate rows, or they may be planted in the same row. You can choose your own selection according to your likes.

Band planting is a technique in which crops are planted in closely spaced double or triple rows instead of single rows. It is effective for crops such as lettuce, cabbage or bush beans. Using pergolas and arbours really helps in this type of planting. Vertical gardening which is a low cost method and low maintenance method includes usage of fences, cages, trellises etc. This technique is usually used for tomatoes and vining crop cultivation.

Good soil fertility is a very important criteria in gardening. Limited availability of space causes more root competition for water and fertilizers.  So it is important to maintain soil fertility by using fertilizers and compost time to time.

Tips And Hints For Proper Lawn Care

Learning about proper lawn care is essential for any homeowner who wants to maintain a tidy and attractive yard. There are several things anyone can do to achieve this goal.

Choose grass seed wisely. Each type of grass seed will have its own requirements when it comes to climate and the best time of year to plant. Proper research will reveal what type of grass grows best in the desired location and the best time of year to plant the seeds. Follow the directions for recommended seed depth for best results.

Selecting the right fertilizer program will ensure the grass grows strong and healthy. Strong chemicals are not always the best choice because they may kill the grass right along with the weeds. A better choice is a weed and feed formula that provides the proper nutrients for the grass to grow while preventing the spread of weeds. The right schedule for fertilizing will depend on climate and location.

Grass seed that has just gone into the ground needs plenty of water for good growth. There is no need to worry about providing too much water during this part of the growth cycle. Avoid short watering sessions in the heat of the day when the sun is shining. Instead, set up a long soaks in the evening or first thing in the morning. This allows the water to seep into the soil before the moisture is lost to evaporation. Purchasing an affordable rain gauge will help you determine the frequency of manual watering needed.

Keeping the lawn mowed is important for healthy grass growth. Invest in a quality mower to avoid doing damage to the lawn. The blade should be changed each year to ensure a clean cut. Mowing a lawn with dull blades will simply flatten the grass down and inhibit further growth.

Advantages Of Retaining Walls

Sometimes, in order to have a home that offers gorgeous views and landscapes, building must be done on the side of a mountain or hill. This makes maintaining the landscape and lawn difficult for homeowners. However, it can be done with the use of retaining wall blocks. These blocks make it possible to level out these lawns, thereby making them necessary and useful.

By choosing this method the results will be a gorgeous lawn that is perfectly level. Retaining walls also eliminate the worry of possible yard erosion and foundation damage to the home. Homeowners do need to be cautious and check local codes regarding retaining walls. If not, they may run the risk of building and wall and then having to remove it.

Building a retaining wall can be a huge undertaking. The home’s position on the side of the hill and the desired length of the wall will determine the amount of block necessary. It is also wise to hire a well-qualified builder to ensure that the wall is constructed properly. Although, there will be a significant financial investment, and it will take some time, having a retaining wall built will be worth it. Although it has practical applications, it will also make a fantastic backdrop for landscaping adding depth and beauty to the yard.

Although many would rather not live on the side of a hill because it can be complicated and difficult, others believe the views are worth the hassle. Having a retaining wall constructed by an expert builder, can create a level and beautiful yard. With a little imagination and planning this terraced area can provide a gorgeous place to showcase one’s shrubbery and flowers. The addition of patio pavers for walking can turn it into a garden area offering homeowners the yard they have always wanted.

Best Ways of Storing Garlic from Your Garden to Preserve Freshness and Flavor

Garlic, the name itself suggests its usefulness is multifaceted. Without a doubt, this is why it is so popular among gardeners. With proper instructions, any gardener can easily get a good crop of garlic. But the problem is how to maintain and keep the bulbs of garlic and cloves in order to grow them again this season?

Each of us knows about the benefits of garlic. Adding garlic to the diet has become a common practice for most of us. Since they are used on a daily basis, we must keep them so that they could be used as and when we want. If the garlic is harvested or purchased from the market, we need to know how to keep them under proper conditions.

Garlic adds a delicious flavor, having said that, the storage and preservation of the flavor depends on the type of garlic. For example, a young wet bulb of garlic is sometimes used instead of onions and leeks, because of its sensitivity. They can be kept well in refrigerator for at least seven days. As for the dry ones, the perfect place to store them will be the one which has less moisture and is relatively cool and dry. Also make sure that there is adequate ventilation, but not direct sunlight. This is important to consider when you are learning how to plant garlic bulbs or growing onions.

Garlic prices usually soar during the winter season, so it is advisable to store them in bulk when prices are relatively low. We noticed people keep them in freezers but this can be damaging as freezing changes the flavor and texture, and consequently, the garlic loses its rich aroma and taste. The best way to keep them in bulk is by using the methods mentioned above. In addition, you can also bake them, and even keep them ready for use at any time.

Landscaping Ideas for Your Front Yard to Increase the Value of Your Home

A front yard should be warm, inviting and add curb appeal to your home. But what if you have a small front yard? Can these provisions still be achieved? Of course! Here are some great small front yard landscaping ideas to help you get started.

Make your small yard look larger. There are a number of easy tricks you can implement to achieve this. Firstly, plant bright colored flowers (think reds, yellows and oranges) up against your house to draw the viewer’s eye away from the yard. The flowers planted in the middle and outskirts of your yard should be in the blue/green spectrum to blend in with the grass and trees. This will make the center area look vaster.

Second, take advantage of the vertical space in your yard to draw the eye upwards. Add height with tall  and narrow trees and bushes or even lamp posts. You can also achieve this look with raised and tiered flower beds.  Another visual trick is to place small features farther back in the yard and larger features close to the front. This works because when we see small objects and large objects we think that the smaller ones are farther away. This technique makes the space between the small and large features seem bigger than it actually is.

Don’t clutter your yard with too many things. When picking your front yard landscaping ideas, keep in mind that you want a simple and clean look. Flower beds shouldn’t take up too much room – keep them small. Everything you put in your yard should be an appropriate size. For instance, if you want a water feature, consider a small pond or bird bath instead of a large pond with a waterfall.

Avoid fencing in your front yard. When a space is small it’s best not to define it with a fence. If you absolutely have to fence in your yard, use a low fence with space in between the posts. Consider a low rod iron fence that will blend in with the landscaping.

Most importantly, work with what you have. Accept the fact that you may not be able to do everything you want. Pick a few small yard landscaping ideas that work for you and stick to them.  Keep in mind that the purpose of the front yard is to add aesthetics to your home. If you have ideas that require a larger space, use them in your back yard!
